What is a Convex Edge?

A convex edge (also called hamaguri or clamshell edge) is a curved blade profile used on premium Japanese scissors. Unlike a flat bevel grind, the convex edge has a smooth, rounded taper to the cutting edge.

This profile creates an incredibly sharp, smooth-cutting blade that glides through hair effortlessly. It's the preferred edge on high-end hairdressing scissors from brands like Hikari, Kasho, and Mizutani.

The problem? Most sharpeners don't have the equipment or training to maintain convex edges correctly.

Convex vs Beveled Edge

Convex
Curved taper, smooth cutting action, requires specialist equipment
Beveled
Flat angle grind, more aggressive cut, easier to sharpen

Why Most Sharpeners Get It Wrong

Standard sharpening equipment is designed for beveled edges. When used on convex scissors, it flattens the curved geometry into a cheap bevel grind.

1

Wrong Equipment

Flat honing wheels can't maintain a curved edge. They grind away the convex profile.

2

Lost Performance

Once the convex edge is flattened, the smooth cutting action is gone forever.

3

Wasted Investment

Premium scissors costing $500-$2000+ reduced to cutting like cheap alternatives.

Convex Edge Sharpening FAQs

Specialist Japanese-style convex sharpening for premium scissors.

A convex edge, also called hamaguri or clamshell, is a smoothly curved blade taper used on premium Japanese-style scissors. Instead of a flat angle ground onto the edge, the steel curves continuously from the blade body down to the cutting edge. The result is a sharper, quieter cut that slices cleanly through wet hair without pushing or folding.
