How much does drill bit sharpening cost in Australia?

Small HSS twist drills (1–6mm) from $4 each. Medium HSS (6–13mm) from $6. Cobalt and masonry bits from $8. Brad-point and Forstner bits are priced per size. Bulk pricing applies on 20+ bits — most workshops send a full bit case at once.

Is it cheaper to sharpen a drill bit or buy a new one?

Accepted Answer

For HSS bits 6mm and larger, sharpening is always cheaper than replacement — and a sharpened bit drills the same as new. For cheap sub-$3 throwaway bits under 5mm, replacement can be cheaper. For cobalt, masonry, brad-point and Forstner bits, sharpening is dramatically cheaper than replacement.

Can you sharpen broken or chipped bits?

Yes — small chips and worn tips are routine. A broken bit can sometimes be re-pointed (shortened and re-sharpened) if enough flute length remains. We'll let you know which bits are worth saving and which aren't before we charge for them.

What about masonry and SDS bits?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We re-sharpen carbide-tipped masonry and SDS-plus bits — flank, gullet and tip angles all restored. Carbide stays intact; only the worn cutting edges are reground.

Do you sharpen Forstner bits?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Forstner bits are sharpened with the rim, scoring teeth and centre spur restored separately. We do not change the diameter — the original cutting profile is preserved.

How do I send drill bits in?

Accepted Answer

Slot them into the original index or wrap each bit individually in cardboard so the tips don't damage each other in transit. Most workshops send a full bit case at once via Australia Post Express. Padded satchel is fine for 10–20 bits; rigid box for full sets.

How many times can a drill bit be sharpened?

Accepted Answer

Typically 5–10 times for HSS twist drills, depending on how much flute length is remaining. Cobalt bits hold up similarly. Masonry bits are limited by how much carbide tip is left. We tell you when a bit is past its useful life.
