What we do

Clipper blade sharpening, done the factory way.

Clipper blade sharpening is most of what leaves this workshop. Pet grooming A5 blades, barber fade and taper blades, T-blade outliners, Wahl 5-in-1 heads and Heiniger horse blades arrive by post from every state, get hollow-ground at the factory edge angle, and go back by Express Post cutting like new.

A clipper blade is two flat steel faces, cutter and comb, that shear hair where the teeth cross. A blade goes blunt when those faces lose their flatness and the shallow hollow that keeps them touching along one line. That is why sandpaper, honing stones and drill-mounted discs never fix a clipper blade: both parts have to be re-ground dead flat on a calibrated wet-grind machine, the hollow and edge re-set, and the blade inspected and tested before it is packed.

Andy McMaster has been sharpening blades for more than 30 years, first in Brisbane and now in Gunning NSW, and every blade crosses his bench. The result is a blade that runs cool, does not pull, and takes 30 to 50 sharpens over its working life.

Why Sharp Blades Matter

Dull clipper blades don't just slow you down. They pull hair, cause discomfort, and can lead to skin irritation for your clients.

Our professional sharpening restores factory-sharp edges, extending blade life and improving your work quality.

  • Smoother, faster cuts
  • Less heat build-up
  • Happier clients (and pets)
  • Extended blade life

Sharpen or replace?

Sharpen first,replace last.

A sharpen is $18 to $25 + GST. A new premium A5 blade is $70 to $90. Most professional blades take 30 to 50 sharpens before the cutter is too thin to hold an edge, so the economics only tip toward replacement when the blade is structurally gone.

Send it for sharpening if it

  • Pulls or drags but every tooth is still there
  • Runs hot within minutes of a clean and oil
  • Needs two or three passes where one used to do
  • Has done four to eight weeks of full-time work since the last sharpen

Replace it if it has

  • Missing or cracked teeth
  • Chips deeper than about 1.5 mm
  • A cracked, bent or warped comb
  • A cutter ground thin or blued by an overheated grinder

Not sure? Post it anyway. If a blade is not worth restoring we say so before charging for it. The full checklist is in when to sharpen vs replace clipper blades, and the intervals by trade are in how often to sharpen clipper blades.
