Scissor sharpening is precision work because scissors do not cut like knives. Two blades pass each other and shear at a single moving point, so the inside faces must stay dead flat, the ride line true and the tension right. Get any of those wrong and the sharpest edge in the world folds hair instead of cutting it.
Hairdressing and grooming shears come in two edge types. Bevelled (German-style) scissors have a flat angle ground into the blade and sharpen on standard equipment. Convex (Japanese-style, hamaguri) scissors have a smooth curved taper with no flat angle at all, and they need a dedicated convex machine plus hand finishing. We run both, which is why a Mizutani and a Jaguar come off the same bench with their original geometry intact.
Andy McMaster has sharpened scissors for more than 30 years, from Brisbane salons in the 1990s to the Gunning NSW workshop today. Every pair is cleaned, sharpened, deburred, tension-set, oiled and test-cut before it is packed, and minor nicks come out as part of the standard sharpen.

All prices plus GST and all include cleaning, nick removal, tension reset and oiling. Larger chips, tip repair and full scissor servicing are quoted before we start, usually $20 to $40 on top of the sharpen. Fifteen percent comes off automatically on 50 or more items.
Scissor Brands We Sharpen
Japanese convex, German bevel, American grooming shears and Australian-made fabric scissors all come through the workshop. If your brand is not listed, post them in anyway.

Pack and post
Close the blades, band them shut, cardboard over the tips, and use a rigid box rather than a soft envelope. Put your name and order reference inside. Post with Australia Post to PO Box 69, Gunning NSW 2581; couriers cannot deliver to a PO Box.
We sharpen
Total turnaround is 7 to 11 business days. Each pair is cleaned, sharpened on the right machine for its edge, deburred, tension-set, oiled and test-cut.
Express return
Sharpened scissors go back by Express Post. Free on orders over $200; under $200, return postage is charged at cost and confirmed on the call.

Convex Edge Specialists
High-quality hairdressing and grooming scissors use a convex (hamaguri) edge, a smooth, curved blade that requires specialist sharpening equipment and expertise.
We use the correct techniques to maintain your scissors' original geometry, ensuring they cut with the same precision as when they were new.
Almost every pairis worth saving.
A $55 to $85 sharpen every four to eight months is a fraction of a $400 to $2,000 pair of shears, and a pair that has only ever been sharpened on the right equipment takes many sharpens over its life. The pairs we cannot bring back are almost always ones that were flat-ground somewhere cheap first.
Send them for sharpening if they
- Push or fold hair at the tips instead of slicing it
- Have small nicks or a rough spot along the edge
- Feel dull after 500 to 700 cuts, or four to eight months of salon work
- Are grooming shears that pull coat or leave lines
Ask us first if they have
- A cracked blade or a snapped tip
- A convex edge flat-ground so many times the curve is gone
- A bent blade that will not close true
- Household-grade steel worth less than the sharpen
Chips, broken tips and re-tensioning are quoted before we start, typically $20 to $40 on top of the sharpen. If your convex shears were flat-ground elsewhere we can usually re-establish the curve.
