Question 1

How much does grooming shear sharpening cost?

Accepted Answer

Straight grooming shears are $30. Curved shears are $35, since the curve adds time and requires careful jig setup. Thinning shears and chunkers are $40 each because every tooth gets individually addressed. Prices include cleaning, edge restoration, tension setting, and oiling. Free Express Post return kicks in on orders over $200, so a couple of full sets ship back free.

Question 2

Do you flatten curved shears when sharpening?

Accepted Answer

No. The curve is the whole point of a curved shear, so we preserve it. Curves are sharpened on dedicated jigs that follow the existing arc rather than dragging the blade across a flat hone. Send your curved shears in confident that they come back with the same profile they left with, just sharp again.

Question 3

Can you sharpen convex grooming shears?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Premium convex grooming shears (Kenchii, Geib Avalanche, Chris Christensen, higher-end Artero) are sharpened on dedicated convex equipment, the same gear we use for Japanese hairdressing scissors. Flat hones destroy convex geometry permanently, so it matters that we keep the two workflows separate. Convex grooming shears price the same as their straight or curved counterparts.

Question 4

How often should busy grooming salons sharpen shears?

Accepted Answer

Full-time salons typically sharpen every 4-8 weeks. Shops doing lots of doodles, golden retrievers, or matted coats run hotter and need closer to 4 weeks. Lighter workloads stretch to 8 weeks. Sharpen before the shear starts folding hair, not after, because waiting causes more material loss when the edge is restored.

Question 5

Should I rotate two sets of shears?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and most professional groomers do. Run set A while set B is in the post for sharpening, then swap when set B comes back. Total turnaround is 7 to 11 business days, so a two-set rotation means you never work with a dull pair. It also halves how often any single shear needs sharpening, which extends each set lifespan.
