A good chisel does three things its owner can never quite reproduce at home: the back is flat across its full length, the primary bevel is square to the back, and the cutting edge is polished to mirror brightness. All three matter — without all three a chisel pares ragged.
We lap the back flat on a precision diamond plate, hollow-grind the primary bevel at the chisel's design angle (25° for paring chisels, 30° for bench, 35° for mortise), then polish a micro-bevel on progressively finer waterstones up to 8000 grit. Carving gouges have inside and outside ground separately on slipstones shaped to the sweep.
